I’ve thought about doing this for years, as an outlet, as a voice for all the things that go unsaid.
I love my job. I’m excellent at my job. My job is hard. Not just the kind of hard that makes you frustrated and overwhelmed but the kind of job that brings you to your knees day after day. The kind of job that makes you cry tears of joy, sob tears of sadness and question your own reality. I give of myself as do so many who share my profession and my passion.
Day after day I must chose not to let it break me down but to let it build me up.
I make light of so many situations because if I think too hard, I will realize how devastating it really is.
So today I will cut the lawn with a vacuum in the middle of winter. Today I will be a cruise ship director. Today I will call her Nonna even though I’m not Italian... or related to her. Today I will assure him that he owes me nothing but a smile. Today I will console her although her husband died 20 years ago. Today I will bounce the baby doll so it stops ‘crying’. Today I will call him corporal and salute. Today I will assure him that the factory is running smoothly and he has nothing to worry about. Today I will pour her a 5th glass of juice because she is sure she hasn’t had any yet.
I am a caregiver to the forgetful. To moms and dads who can’t remember their kids names. To grandmas who have forgotten their favourite recipes. To grandpas who can’t remember how they once made a living. My job is to see them where they are. To join them where they are and never let them forget that they are so so loved.
